<h1>An Introduction to Ulcerative Colitis</h1> <p align=right>by Geraint Roberts</p> <div align=justify>Ulcerative Colitis is an inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) and has similar symptoms to Crohn's disease. The inner lining of the large intestine and rectum become inflamed in ulcerative colitis patient. The illness usually starts in the rectum and lower intestine and travels through the colon. The small intestine is normally not affected, except the very lower section called the ileum. <BR><BR>The symptoms of ulcerative colitis can vary from individual to individual. Some patients will only have mild symptoms that may never progress to anything more than diarrhea other patients may suffer a long list of symptoms. Diarrhea is the most common symptom associated with ulcerative colitis. Other symptoms include:<BR><BR>Abdominal pain<BR>Bloody diarrhea<BR>Loss of nutrients<BR>Weight loss <BR>Fatigue<BR>Loss of appetite <BR>Rectal bleeding<BR>Liver disorders<BR><BR>The symptoms of ulcerative colitis may resemble symptoms of Crohn's disease or Irritable Bowel Syndrome. For this reason it is important to seek medical attention if you are suffering from these symptoms.
