Teacher Poisoned
Click for Readable HTML Version Teacher Poisoned by Martin S. Suro As I arrived home from work today, my wife had the television on and she was watching the news. This is rare, in and of itself, because I usually arrive at home at least two hours before she does. Anyway, as I greeted my wife with a kiss and I was putting the mail on the kitchen table and my gear temporarily on the floor; the television grabbed my attention. I froze and carefully listened to all the horrific details. Apparently a 46 year old, teacher at San Ysidro Middle School, in the southern most part of San Diego County in California, was monitoring a group of approximately six to nine 12 and 13 year olds who were serving lunch time detention for various reasons, I imagine none of them good. It is reported by the local media that the teacher excused himself from the group to use the bathroom facilities nearby. As the teacher made his way to the bathroom, one of the children serving detention, got the bright idea to pour some kind of hand sanitizer into the teacher’s energy drink that he had left behind on his desk. As you may imagine the students were probably on their best behavior when the teacher returned, anxiously awaiting the results of their antic, hoping the teacher would finish the rest of his drink in their presence. Their wish came true; soon after returning to class, the teacher, consumed the remainder of his beverage and a few minutes later, before lunch ended, began to feel nauseous and then collapsed. The children, by now frightened and beleaguered with guilt, immediately sought help from other teachers nearby. Emergency medical services were summoned. Paramedics arrived at the scene and were able to stabilize the bewildered teacher, who refused to go to the hospital and any further medical attention. Police were called as well when it was suspected that a poisoning had occurred. The local authorities are currently investigating the case. Now, call me crazy or melancholy, but wouldn’t those children have received a serious pasting from their parents, oh, let’s say 30 or 40 years ago? I do believe so. Not only that but these cases were very few and far between because discipline ruled the schools and teachers had the authority to use corporal punishment and exercised it when necessary. Granted, there were a few teachers who abused this, tool, let’s call it, but they were also few and far between. Now, teachers and schools have no authority and no respect. It is evident in our current society. Look at any teenager anywhere in the United States that is enrolled in public school. They do not respect their teachers and they sass and disrespect their parents as well. Still, most parents are quick to react when their troubled teenager blames his teachers for their own bad grades and others for their problems. The teens will say “The teacher lost my homework and now she won’t give me credit, that’s so unfair.” “I’m failing the class because the teacher doesn’t know how to do her job.” Does any of this sound familiar? If it does, take a step back and look at the whole picture. Talk to your children’s teachers. If you do, your children will be less likely to lie, that’s right, your children lie. Check up on what your children are telling you; take everything they say with a grain of salt. No, I am not a teacher, thank God! (No disrespect intended because they are already disrespected enough). But I am a very concerned parent. With that I will leave you for now. Regards, Martin Suro p.s.
