Acne is more common in males because androgens (male sex hormones) like testosterone stimulate the production of keratin and sebum which leads to clogged pores. During puberty, androgens increase in both sexes. Hormones don’t go away after adolescence, though. Many women suffer premenstrual acne flare-ups. Many different medical applications are used to treat acne, but there are some natural treatments that are beneficial in the acne care. Here are some recommendations. • Steam sauna for the face – lavender, red clover, and strawberry leaves can be used for a steam sauna. Lavender kills germs and stimulates new cell growth. In a glass or enamelled pot simmer a total of 2 to 4 tablespoons of dried or fresh herbs in 2 quarts of water. When the pot is steaming, place it on a table and sit with your face at a comfortable distance over the steam for fifteen minutes. You can use a towel to trap the steam if you wish. After fifteen minutes, splash your face with cold water. Caution: If acne is extensive or badly inflamed, do not use steam treatments, as this may worse the condition. • Tea tree oil is a natural antibiotic and antiseptic. Add 1 dropper of tea tree oil to ¼ cup warm water and pat it on the affected area with a clean cotton ball. • Eat a diet that is high in fibber. This is important for keeping the colon clean and ridding the body of toxins. • Increase your intake of raw foods that contain oxalic acid, including almonds, beets, cashews, and Swiss chard. • Eat more foods rich in zinc, including shellfish, soybeans, whole grains, sunflower seeds, and a small amount of raw nuts daily. Zinc is an antibacterial agent and a necessary element in the oil-producing glands of the skin. • Try eliminating dairy products from your diet for one month. Acne may develop due to an allergic reaction to dairy products, and the fat content of them. After the month is over, add dairy products back at a time to see if the acne returns. Acne is a disorder resulting from the action of hormones and other substances on the skin’s oil glands. Acne lesions usually occur on the face, neck, back, chest, and shoulders. Although acne is usually not a serious health threat, it can be a source of emotional distress. Severe acne can lead to permanent scarring. In order to find the best acne treatment for you, start with essential oils. If that doesn’t work, go to the next step by trying other natural treatments. You may also consider being tested for food allergies, as certain allergies can cause acne. For those who suffer from severe and persistent acne should talk to a doctor.
