<h1>Indian jewellry as a means of celebrating the body</h1> <p align=right>by Harpreet Vohra</p> <div align=justify>In India, a country of Asia, women, spirituality and jewellery have been eternally linked. The people there think of Indian jewellry as a means of celebrating the body. When the physical body of a woman or person is adorned with jewelries and other body ornaments, it has been said to make the spirit of the body contented. So, in this sense, Indian jewellry is not just a simple decoration for the body, or a piece that is put on for other people to see. An Indian jewellery is known to have symbolisms and various meanings. With the use of an Indian jewellry, there is unspoken communication between the person who is wearing the jewellry and the person watching. Aside from these views, the elegant body of a woman holds the true art and enigma which comes with the environmental nature. So, it is fit to uphold this elegance by adorning every part of the body with an Indian jewellry. The notion that anything that is adorned and decorated with jewelries is magnificent and splendid to look at. Like a poetry that is beautified with rhetoric words, so should a woman be, beautified even more with dazzling ornaments. Simplicity in this country does not apply for women. Women who are not wearing jewelries do not look beautiful enough, on the other hand, women who are decorated with an Indian jewellry are considered as apparitions of beauty. And it is considered as a mock to the natural beauty of a woman not to beautify her and adorn her. Aside from women fulfilling their status of beauty, adorning themselves with Indian jewellry also serves as a means of warding off bad things and unfortunate events, and bringing in good luck. When a woman is fully decorated with jewelries and ornaments, she is developing in herself a sense of an ideal beauty and a deep sense of spirituality and peacefulness. The women in India are adorned with an Indian jewellry from their head to their toes. The Indian jewellry consists of sixteen kinds which the number is associated to the sixteen cycles of the moon's existence. The various cycles of the moon is also associated with the cycle of a woman's menstruation period. In addition, a girl who is approaching her sixteen years of life is considered as reaching the utmost perfection of her physical beauty. The Indian jewellry that is included in these sixteen ornaments is the following. The Tika is an Indian jewellry which has a hook and a pendant, each placed respectively at both ends. The Anjana is a color put on the lids of a woman's eyes. The nath is an Indian jewellry that is put on the nose to represent the seductiveness of a woman. The haar is also an inclusion to the basic Indian jewellry. It is a necklace which a woman in India should also wear to bind themselves with good luck. The bangles are also included in an Indian jewellry set. These jewelries also signifies the status of a married woman. The tinkling of the bangles symbolizes her different emotions. The baajuband is an Indian jewellry used to adorn the upper part of the arm. The number of armbands that a woman wears is based on her married status and her community. The arsi is a ring for the thumb which has a mirror. This is a jewellery which is appropriate for young women for them to check if their hair is in place or if they look nice.
