Safety Tips in Using an Escalator

Escalator accidents are rare but they do happen. Based on the study conducted by the Consumer Safety Commission, elevator accidents accounted for 7,300 hospital emergency injuries in United States. Seventy five percent of these injuries are due to fall, another 20% when hands and feet are trapped in these machines.

To avoid the escalator accidents CSC created these helpful tips to be followed:

• Always hold the handrail

Handrails are designed to keep you in place. They will minimize the tendency of slipping and tripping accidents. Holding the handrail will help you stay on put while the escalator moves.

• Always face forward

Facing forward will make you at ease and focus at the same time prepared to make necessary options in case the people in front of you take an accidental fall.

• Avoid the edges of steps where possible entrapment can occur

Each escalator is specifically design to show this edge where a possible entrapment can occur. The yellow lines in each side of the elevator shows the place where you are permitted to put your feet to avoid entrapment.

• Do not bring children onto escalators in strollers, walkers or carts

Using strollers, walkers or carts during an escalator ride will most likely create danger for you and your escalator companions.

• Always hold children hands and do not permit them to play during your escalator ride

Children playing while using an escalator may distract you and others around you. Always be aware of the danger that lies beyond playing in escalators.

• Learn where the emergency shutoff buttons are, in case you need to stop the elevator.

The Emergency shutoff buttons are usually located at the top and bottom of each escalator. The button should always be on the right side of escalator when facing the stairs.

• Always wear safe shoes to avoid falling

Be aware that loose shoelaces, mittens, drawstring and scarves can be trapped in elevator. If you are wearing it during your escalator ride, kindly remove it to safeguard yourself from being struck.

In addition to the safety, tips given by the CSC, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers/American National Standards Institute Escalator Committee sets a voluntary standard to ensure your safety.

If you have followed all the general tips when using an escalator, you are unlikely to experience trouble, but if the injury is cause by someone else, negligence punishment should be properly inflicted.

In the case of escalator accidents, the establishment owner is commonly blamed because of inadequate maintenance and negligence. However, there are cases that the failure is due to product defects, the unit manager could be held accountable for the product failure to meet the standards expected.

Victims of escalator accidents are qualified to file their personal injury claims concerning the damages they have acquired in the escalator accidents.

The compensation for the damages depends upon the severity of the injury. Some injury will take some time to be cured. They often undergo clinical treatment that cost them inconsiderable amount of money.

Generally, this type of accidents can be dealt with an expert personal injury attorney with specialization in escalator accidents. These attorneys will most likely enable you to obtain the necessary compensation associated with your injury.

With an escalator accident lawyer, you can get the maximum benefits for your claim, compared to the lowest settlement amount an insurance company can offer.
