The UK’s first online divorce service, Divorce-Online, is bracing staff for a rush of couples heading to the divorce courts and has come up with a fresh idea to save people money. Following the summer holidays, September is the second-busiest month of the year for divorce applications following the stress of spending extended time together. However, when they investigate costs, many disillusioned partners cannot raise the necessary cash immediately to begin proceedings, so Divorce -Online now offers interest-free credit to spread the cost of getting divorced over several months. The service launched on Monday 17th September to meet the demand of a waiting list of clients.
According to Relate statistics, disagreements over money are the second most common cause of divorce. The pressures of ‘keeping up with the Jones’s’ on expensive holidays cause problems in unstable marriages and Mark Keenan, Managing Director of Divorce-Online says ‘Couples trying to hold rocky relationships together for the sake of their children often decide to split once the schools reopen for the Autumn term.’
Divorce-Online is already one of the least expensive ways of getting divorced as their £170 or £290 fees compare very favourably with traditional solicitors’ costs of between £850 - £2,500 for an uncontested or amicable divorce. The interest-free Diamond package with court fees included costs £510 and the Diamond Plus managed service including a financial order and court fees totals £670. All that is required is a 10% deposit and six equal monthly instalments.
Based in Swindon, Divorce-Online was established in 2000 by paralegal expert Mark Keenan who had worked for fifteen years in solicitors firms, manually doing similar tasks to those he has now streamlined and automated for the Divorce-Online process. The company’s 2006 turnover was £ 300,000.
Divorce-Online was the first UK company to offer Divorce advice, support and practical help over the internet, specifically for couples going through an amicable or uncontested divorce. Divorce-Online developed a new market which now hosts many copycat organisations.
In May 2007, Divorce-Online was the first UK company to advertise divorce services online. This gained widespread national and internet media coverage, resulting in sales doubling against forecast every month since then. The number of staff has also doubled since that successful PR campaign.
