Tips on Filing Your Car Accident Insurance Claim

Dealing with insurance companies may be difficult. Motorcycle accident, car accident, truck accident or any type of motor vehicle accident, where one is involved, inevitably, one has to deal with insurance companies and their agents to recover claims for ones injuries.

Filing an insurance claim after an accident and dealing with insurance adjusters may be hard and quite complicated. To help you, here are some tips on what to do and what to avoid when making insurance claims:

• Contact your insurance company immediately after the accident or injury. Your insurance agent should be the first person to contact in case of an accident or injury, unless you are suffering from serious injuries where you have to seek medical assistance first.

• Read and understand your insurance policy to help you determine what the coverage of your policy is in order to make the needed claims.

• Gather as many details of the accident as possible, including the names and contact numbers of those involved in the accident and the witnesses, if there are any. Witnesses may be able to help you later in proving your insurance claim. Also, take pictures of the damaged vehicles and any injuries sustained.

• Take notes of the insurance details of other persons involved in the accident.

• Keep a written report of any dealings and conversations with the insurance agents, officers, and any other persons involved in the claims process.

• Save bills and receipts for any and all expenses that is related to your insurance claim including bills for any repair work done on the damaged vehicle and medical costs for the treatment of any injuries sustained from the accident that are covered by your insurance policy.

• Be honest with the insurance investigators. A claim may be denied for fraudulent reasons so it is important to tell the facts.

• Check if you have more than one insurance policy that covers for a specific injury or accident. If you have, review all your policies and you may be able to file valid insurance claims.

• Do not admit that you are in any way liable for the accident, just state the facts. It is the duty of the insurance investigators to get all the needed evidences and facts to determine liability.

• File your insurance claim as soon as possible. All insurance companies require a specific period of time after the injury or accident when you can file your insurance claim. Your claim may not be considered valid if you filed your insurance claim when the time limit has run out.

• Do not give anything to insurance officers that is in writing if you do not completely understand your insurance policy or claim.

• Consult your lawyer for proper legal assistance. A skilled lawyer will help you understand better all the insurance policies and will help estimate the value of your claim and your losses to achieve a fair and just compensation.

These tips may be helpful in filing your insurance claims if ever an event will happen wherein you will be involved in a car accident. Generally, people do not even think about being involved in an accident, but since these things happen unexpectedly, it is wise to be prepared.
