Car Accident

Car accidents have been thought by many as becoming the main cause of preventable death over the next fifteen years because of the number of people injured or killed in car accidents every year. Annually, there are about 6 million car accidents in the United States.

These car accidents usually result in devastating effects. Its aftermath are usually injuries or deaths of many people resulting in many personal injury claims filed in courts.

Outcomes of Car Accidents

Because of car accidents, thousands of people suffer injuries and some die as a result.

Any damage to the spinal cord that could result in losing function (such as mobility or feeling) is a spinal cord injury. About 450,000 people suffer from this injury and around 11,000 new spinal cord injuries every year.

The effects of spinal cord injury may be either complete or incomplete. Complete injury means there is no sensation and no voluntary movement and both sides of the body are affected. On the other hand, people who retain some sensation or movement below the level of injury where they may be able to feel the body parts that are affected and cannot be moved have an incomplete injury.

• Brain Injury

Damages to the brain are called brain injuries. These commonly result from an accident or an impact to the brain. Over 50,000 people die due to brain damage and trauma.

Brain injuries may be either acquired or traumatic, depending on the cause of the injury.

Brain injuries have levels: mild, moderate, and serious. A mild brain injury can cause symptoms such as headache, memory problems, vomiting, confusion, depression, and emotional problems. In moderate brain injury, the symptoms may last longer than in a mild injury and the effects can be more tremendous. Lastly, serious brain injuries include, coma, brain death, vegetative state, akinetic mutism, minimally responsive state, and locked in syndrome.

These injuries have a high possibility in resulting in serious incapacitation or death.

• Burn Injury

A burn injury, which may result from car accidents, is one of the most agonizing and painful injuries a person can ever experience.

It may impair some of the body's normal functions, including body thermal regulation, body temperature, physical appearance, joint function, manual dexterity, and normal fluid or electrolyte balance.

Burns are classified according to the method and degree of the burn.

• Head Injury

Head injury is a trauma to the head that leads to the injury of the scalp, brain, or skull. It is classified depending on the cause of the damages: closed head injury and open or penetrating head injury.

These injuries may have an enormous impact on the victims, as some of them may not recover fully, stay in their injured state, or even die.

• Wrongful Death

Wrongful death is a death that resulted because of another's negligence, malpractice, recklessness, or inaction but could have been avoided.

Wrongful death may be the worst aftermath of a car accident because a life of a person can never be brought back and death may totally affect the ones the deceased had left behind.
