Sometimes I feel like a doctor, especially lately. People have
been asking about living wills.
Since the Terri Schiavo fiasco in Florida where the Supreme
Court, the President, Congress and everybody got involved in
keeping Terri Schiavo alive which was essentially against her
wishes.
The written living will has become more important. Just to help
out, I've come up with what we call the Pocket Living Will so you
can have one that you keep on your possession. Now hospitals are
required under federal law to ask you upon admission if you have
a living will. If you do, they want a copy of it.
Most people don't carry a living will with them, so we make one
that is available to keep in your purse, your wallet or the glove
box of a car so it will be readily available.
Now let me tell you a little story about Maxine. She's one of my
clients and I am one of her closest friends. She has a Pocket
Living Will. One day, her postman notice that her mail had been
building up in her mailbox. He got very concerned and called the
police. The police came, broke the door in, went into her home
and found Maxine laying unconscious in a corner.
They didn't know who to contact, but then they noticed that there
was a Pocket Living Will in her purse. In it was my name and
phone number so they called me and I was able to give them
directions to get her help.
They took her to the hospital and because she had everything in
writing, they knew what kind of medical attention she needed. She
fully recovered and was able to make some of her own decisions
later on. But if this Pocket Living Will had not been there, the
police say they would not have known who to contact for medical
instructions. And so we were very thankful that she had that with
her.
That shows you how important a Pocket Living Will can be. You do
not know when you are going to need it. So it's a good think to
have one prepared that you can have nearby in case there is an
emergency.
