If you're reading this, you're interested in, and probably looking for, a promotional item. Perhaps you have an upcoming trade show or other event, or you're looking for an item to include in your next direct mail piece or as a leave behind for your sales reps. There are thousands of promotional products and thousands of ways to use them. Out of this myriad of options, your goal should be to create the perfect promotional product for your needs, whatever they may be. Hopefully this article can help.
    What are promotional items?
Promotional items are products that have been custom imprinted with a logo and/or message for use in marketing or advertising. Some products are common in everyday life, such as promotional pens, mugs, bags and notebooks. Other products are almost always used in a promotional context, such as stress balls, lanyards and koozies. Sometimes you may be surprised at the variety of things that can be imprinted. Fishing lures, for example, probably don't come to mind immediately when you think about promotional items. The bottom line is that pretty much anything can be imprinted, and the uses of promotional products are so broad there's a situation when any item may be the perfect part of a promotion. What do promotional products do?
A better question might be, "What do you want them to do?" A well executed promotional product can drive traffic to your trade show booth, remind someone who to call when their car breaks down, provide a memorable introduction to a new product or service, you name it, they can do it. Just like any form of marketing or advertising, a successful promotion has to start with a clearly defined goal and an understanding of the target audience. Product selection and artwork need to be driven by the overall objective and context in which the item will be used. The end result of any successful promotion is the recipient taking the action you desire. What factors do I need to consider when purchasing promotional products?
An important part of selecting the right product for your needs is considering how you will customize it. In addition to the function of the item, the type of product you select may be influenced by price, the size of the imprint area, the number of colors that can be printed on the item and the production time required. Customization options should always be considered as a part of product selection. Does it have to be complicated?
Luckily, the answer is no. With clear goals and the help of an experienced promotional products vendor, any business or organization should be able to put together a successful promotion. Your goals, budget and audience will drive product selection and message, and the firm you purchase from should be able to handle the artwork and technical details, working with your designer or marketing department if you have one, or as your designer if you don't. Happy promoting!
