Know Your Market: Keeping Up With Change

All of us involved in internet marketing are faced with the daunting challenge of finding the right market. After we find our market, we narrow it down to the right market segment. Most feel a great sense of relief after we have successfully located the right niche. Few realize that the market challenges are really just beginning. No matter how much of an expert in our specific market we thought we were, we are continually required to learn even more. There is more required than just the translating our expertise into marketable products. The real challenge is in staying current with the market, and then growing our expertise even more. Staying current and even ahead of the market requires that we examine the market under a microscope. We need to examine the market for: • The newest products and services that are just emerging. • The current ‘hot’ and in-demand products and services. • The products and services that are going ‘cold’ and as a result, falling out of favor with consumers. • Changes within the consumer base. (Influx of new members. Existing members leaving. Demographics within the consumer group.) • Product and service trends that are beginning to occur as a result of changes. • Product and service pricing trends. So what are you to do? You must study the market on an ongoing basis. You must invest the time to stay abreast with changes that are occurring. We all have reasons for hesitating, but this is an investment that must be made. It does not matter whether: • Your current workload is barely manageable. • There does not seem to be the time to do more work. • Just keeping up on a daily basis has become a challenge. Your online success demands that time be allotted to stay in touch with the marketplace. The following are a few options to help you. • Read and study: Read pertinent books, e-books, articles, magazines. • Attend seminars: It doesn’t matter whether a seminar is held over the telephone or in person. Just be sure that the information is timely, pertinent and high-quality. • Subscribe to newsletters: Newsletters that are written and published by knowledgeable people can provide a wealth of information. Be aware of the author’s credentials. Newsletters that provide market survey data on an ongoing basis can provide a great starting place when you begin examining trends. • Communicate with others in your industry, market and niche: E-mail, telephone and face-to-face contacts are all valuable. While some may hesitate to exchange information, many will realize that everyone wins when factual information is exchanged. Just make sure that you are prepared before hand when making these contacts. • Conduct surveys: If you are a newsletter publisher, survey your readers. If you are not, many publishers are willing to work with you to create and execute a survey. A win/win situation can be created for all involved. It is important that you invest the time to continually stay current with market trends. Even better is to develop the skills to stay ahead, as those who can successfully anticipate trends can take full advantage of emerging trends in the products and services that they provide.
