There are so many ways to promote a website (click thru programs, emailing campaigns, classified adds, online forums and blogs, etc.,) that one can think that promoting an affiliate program would be easy, after all it's just about sending traffic to your affiliate url.
Here's where resides maybe the worst missunderstanding about affiliate programs marketing, and for own business programs as well.
First of all, you need to understand that your time and effort should be for your benefit first, and not for the owner(s) of the affiliate program you are promoting. Yes, you'll receive a commission for what you sell, but have you think that you're giving upfront a client that could represent more future business to you? Everyone knows that the best client is that one that has purchase from you before.
How about targeting your campaigns to a lead capture page where you first capture the contact information of your clients (Name and email at least) through a contact form and then redirect this client to your affiliate, MLM, or any business page you are promoting?
This way at least you'll share this client with the owner of the affiliate program for further products. How about a visitor that did not like or purchase from the affiliate program you're promoting...? you lost that shot forever, unless you captured his contact info.
Do you follow me? The idea is: first you build your 'captive' market and then you promote the affiliate, MLM, or any business program you're involved in. Heck, .... you use them to build your 'captive' market the same way they use you, don't you like this idea?? I bet you do!
You might think that this is a great idea but..."how am I suppossed to do this, I barely know how to use a web browser".
