A Internet Experiment for beer money
Working in IT system support for the past few years, learning about servers/networks/dns etc I decided to see how difficult it would be to get traffic to a website and try to make some beer money using adsense/banners etc. Using the cheapest way possible, doing everything myself and getting all the info from the web!
The idea
This by far is the hardest part – if you have a good idea/product and build a good accessible website around this idea with keywords etc, then it would be just a matter of time before it starts making money.
I wish an idea like this would pop into my head but it hasn't yet !!!!
So using wordtracking software I took a look at what people were searching for on the web. I found 2000 daily searches for these 4 bizarre key words (people search for this stuff?) I searched the web myself with these keywords and found the competition pretty shabby.
This could make some beer money !
Build it and they shall come
I'm so tight my arse squeaks when I walk down the road! How much is this going to cost
Old apache linux server in the basement $0
Joomla software for webpage/gallery $0
Hours worked $0
domain name/DNS hosting $37 for the year
I'll throw away $37 to try something new, might even learn something !
Where's the traffic?
OK – sites up – doesn't look too bad considering my skills in hacking and butchering html/css code, but where is everybody?where's the traffic? Oh yeah, I forgot that really important part – getting indexed. If I don't get on a SERP somewhere I'm screwed, how is anybody going to know where the site is? What a waste of time and energy. You know what this means?
No beer money !! Don't panic, I've got an idea
Linking
I need to get linked to a website that has already been indexed by google/msn/yahoo webcrawlers. They'll find me by following their links and I'll eventually get indexed. Maybe I can write my way into a index. I'll write an article and post it with a link back to my site. Surely one of these sites will be indexed already and the website will get discovered eventually !!!!
