How to Lose a Customer

You are doing everything you can to get traffic. Now you have the traffic but it is not converting to a sale? There are a lot of common 'techniques' people use that turn people off after they get to their sites and it is a real waste. Awareness is good, but action is the only way to avoid these mistakes. Let's figure out what may be driving people away from your site and causing you to lose business, and make the necessary changes.

Marketing: Once you have developed your website, the hard part begins. You have to market your website in order to get traffic. There is no use in spending time and money creating your website, if you fail to market it. Follow-through and market aggressively. Successful marketing requires a great deal of momentum. Don't think - put up an ad someplace and this is good. Yes this is good, but it is not enough. You need to try lots of different avenues. If one way is good, twenty is better. You will find there are plenty of internet marketing resources that are free, make use of these, in addition to any paid advertising methods you may employ.

Do Counters Help? If your visitor counter shows a low number, that is a psychological turn-off. It says 'hello, this site is new and unproven', or is not very popular. If you don’t want to take the visitor counter off your site many third party counter scripts like Statcounter offer you the option to hide the counter. Keep your stats in the admin area, and for your eyes only.

Too Many 'Bells and Whistles'. Keep your website simple and easy to navigate. There are so many clever things you can add to your website, but they are only going to distract the visitor and may even send them off to find out how to get one - not your product, but the gimmick. As well, things like flash presentations, slow down your page load a lot. Animated graphics and other large graphics, as well as automatic loading videos and audio also slow your page load. Maybe create a splash page for your "movie" and leave your website in pristine condition - a place to shop not be entertained.

Up-to-Date Statements. Always make sure you include links to copyright, privacy, disclaimer and TOS statements on every page, and update the year as appropriate. The way time is flying, and only 3 years ago seems like an eternity. If visitors see that the information is out of date, it says nobody is home and your website has not been updated for years!

Short Attention Span: Long sentences can be tedious and can kill interest. People get easily distracted. Help your visitors by keeping your sentences short and to the point. As well, Long pages can kill you! There are studies that show most people will not read long pages of text. Even over-long sales pages, while good for the serious shopper, will lose those that are 'just looking' and possibly discourage them from taking action to make a purchase from you.

Keep your pages as short as you can without leaving important details out of your content. If you have a lot of content that is relevant to the bottom line, make short pages with links like "more information", “next” or 'see bonus page', so people can read more if they are seriously interested. Remember you can monetize each page with AdSense boxes or other advertising at the same time.

Use Active, Motivating Language. Use active sentences and active verbs on your website as they are much more powerful and give more energy to your site than passive verbs do. You want to excite and compel someone to take action, rather than to ramble on - When writing, try to imagine speakers that held your interest, versus people who drone on and on and put you to sleep.

Toot Your Horn! Honestly emphasize the benefits of your products or services - State facts - People are getting pretty sensitive to hype, so keep it real. Tell them how they can actually benefit from your products. Tell them what is in it for them. Appeal to their feelings and emotions. In this regard, I have read that people are also afraid they will miss something. So you might want to mention it would be wise to take action now.

Most of the 'masses' don't need or want to know all the details - however, there are those who do, so you may want to include a link to 'specifications' or 'more information' for those type of shoppers. This way you will keep everyone happy.

Call to Action! Tell your visitors what to do with the information you have given them. Examples: “Click Here to Get Started', 'Sign up for our newsletter', 'Call Us' , 'Order Now!' Forgetting to lead people in this way may result in a 'thanks for the information, bye', rather than actually causing your visitors to feel compelled to make a purchase before they leave.
