Why is Diwali celebrated in India Deepawali festival 2008 Bhai Dooj Deepawali gifts History and importance of Diwali

Diwali is celebrated in India with great pomp and joy. It is celebrated in India as well as in Nepal where it is called “Tihar” from many years. It is the biggest festival of India that celebrates the victory of good against the evil. People celebrate and enjoy this festival by firing crackers, wearing new clothes, sharing sweets, visiting each other's place, exchange a lot of gifts and giving good wishes to the loved ones. There is a historical reason behind celebrating this auspicious festival.

In Northern India, it is celebrated because on this day Lord Ram returned to his kingdom, Ayodhya, after conquering Lanka after fourteen long years. Lord Ram was asked by his father, Dashrath, to go to the wild forests in search of queen Sita as the king of Lanka, Ravan, had abducted her in the forests. So, Lord Ram went to the forests along with his only brother Laxman. In the forests, he met the king of all monkies, Sugriva.

Sugriva sent monkies around the world to search for mother Sita. Finally, Lord Hanuman found mother Sita in the kingdom of Ravan. He burnt Lanka and returned to inform Lord Ram about her. Then a large army of monkies and bears were prepared and invaded Lanka. Vibhishan, the brother of Ravan, had also joined Lord Ram in the battle. Finally, Ravan was defeated. This success of battle by Lord Ram against Ravan rejoiced the people and was celebrated. This in turn, happened to be the festival of celebration of the Hindus in India. The people of Ayodhya lit an array of clay lamps in celebration of his return.

In memory of this success, people celebrate this day by burning candles and also by lighting colorful lights around their home after cleaning their home before Diwali. It has a deep significance for this. According to the Vedic culture, the message of Deepawali is to spread light and eradicate darkness from the world. Today in India, it is celebrated not only by the Hindus but also by the Sikhs, Jains and even some Buddhists all over the globe. As per the Hindu calendar, it is the beginning of the New Year. On Bhai Dooj, sisters meet their brothers and vice versa and exchange presents and sweets to express their feelings for each other. The term “Deepavali”, is actually originated from Sanskrit which means ‘an array of lamps’.
