Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless gas but is very harmful to humans and animals. Most cases of carbon monoxide poisioning result from an unknown leak of CO gas. The best way to keep safe from harmful co gas is to have a co detector much like many homes have a smoke detector. In fact, you can even find combo smoke and carbon monoxide alarms but they are a bit more expensive. Before purchasing co detectors it is a good idea to walk through your home, condo, apartment or building to determine where you will place the devices and how many you need.
Proper Monitoring
For the absolute best protection and monitoring of harmful gases you would put a detector in every room which is highly recommended. If you are on a budget then space the purchases out over a few months placing co detectors in the places most likely to cause concern and then move to the other rooms. If you have a garage then definitely put one there to start; especially since cars give off carbon monoxide while they are running. Other tools in the garage or a shed may also produce co gas so it is best to cover this as first base. Children and babies are more susceptible to a low level of co gas so cover bedrooms with kids next; I would say the garage and kids rooms have the same top priority. The next two places to cover are hallways and the kitchen; once you install a detector or alarm in each of these common rooms move on to the rest of the bedrooms.

There are a few very well known smoke alarms and co detector companies that have a proven reliable track record including Kidde, BRK Electronics and First Alert. There are also generic brands for the budget conscious consumer just be sure the detector or alarm is UL listed and meets NFPA standards for safety. There is usually a five year warranty on these products but you should still test every six months at a minimum. It is a good idea to replace when the five years are up or the test fails; I prefer the five year mark instead of waiting for a failure but that is because I am sometimes overly cautious, better safe than sorry.
