Austin Music Lakes and Food

Austin has such a diverse cultural, generational and geographical population, if you ask someone what they like about Austin, you will get a multitude of answers. Austin is a city where any occasion can be a cause for a celebration or festival (Spam-a Rama or Eor’s Birthday Party). For many, Austin is “THE” place for live music. If you are looking for a specific brand of music whether it is jazz, blues, classical, punk, alternative, rock or country, chances are you will find a festival, club or restaurant somewhere in town. One of the most popular is the downtown district around 6th street and the warehouse district. These clubs offer various music venues for the famous and the not so famous artist whose love of music has found an audience whose love for music equals their own. On any given night you will find Austinites, music lovers that are young and old, students or professionals, newcomers or visitors who are listening to their favorite bands and singers or finding an artist that is new and different. Austin is a host to many music festivals year ‘round, two of the most famous are the ACL Festival and SXSW. These two festivals alone bring in millions of dollars to the economy and thousands of visitors to the Austin area. For others who live here, the abundance of water is their passion. The Austin area is almost surrounded by lakes, rivers or streams. Lake Travis is one of the most popular, providing more than enough room for boating and other water craft, fishing, swimming or just spending the day. Set as it is in the hill country, you will find some the most magnificent views of the lakes. You will also find plenty of restaurants and clubs that take advantage of these views.(The Oasis or Carlos and Charlie’s) Town Lake, renamed Lady Bird Lake, runs through the center of Austin and is a favorite for spot for canoeing or the extensive hike and bike trails. Zilker Park, home to Barton Springs, is another area that is popular for swimming or just hanging out on hot summer days. Around Austin there are numerous State and local parks that provide ample opportunity for excellent fishing. The weather around Austin can be extremely hot or extremely cold, but typically it is absolutely perfect for any of the numerous water related activities that are a part of what makes Austin a great city. Another answer will be food. Typically B-B-Q Austin can boast of some excellent restaurants for upscale gourmet dining. But for residents and visitors alike the search for the best B-B-Q is an event in itself. It doesn’t matter what your preference is there is a B-B-Q joint that will provide it. There are restaurants, competitions, cook-offs, and all manner of events where cooks of all ages, gender and all walks of life strive to earn the title of “The Best B-B-Q” even if it just for that day and that event. They have secret recipes for seasoning, what wood to use, how long to cook it, at what temperature and the list goes on. These are all fun and friendly competitions but are also serious business to those who participate. Next week there will be another contest and probably another winner for the contestants. For the rest of us there is just the chance to try some of the world’s best B-B-Q Typically on a beautiful day, to raise money for some cause or another, next to the water, with live music playing somewhere in the background.
