Boxing Training Tips


When you first enter your boxing gym take the time to look around and find those who are training diligently and place yourself with that group. 1. Dress appropriately, wear loose warm comfortable clothing and proper shoes. Sneakers for running, boxing shoes for sparring. 2. Loosen up well before working out. 3. Always wrap hands carefully. 4. All workouts should be goal oriented. 5. Skilled tasks should be done first, don’t let fatigue interfere with learning. 6. Shadow box for form - think while shadow boxing- use the mirror its the best coach in any gym. 7. Make workouts short and spirited. 8. Work according to timed rounds. 9. Supervised sparring, only when you are fresh and can learn. 10. Spar with a purpose. 11. Always use all the proper gear while sparring. 12. Use grease on face during sparring drills. 13. Use large gloves for training and sparring (16 oz.). 14. Use the heavy bag to work on combination punching and developing power. 15. Depending on the level of your training 8-12 rounds of total work is sufficient. 16. Do conditioning last. 17. Do not work to the point of excessive fatigue. Don't leave your fight in the gym. 18. Abdominal exercises in every workout. 19. Do not sit down during workout - keep moving ( do not give into your body your mind is a million times stronger). 20. Do not lose weight unnaturally make your diet a way of life. 21. Avoid drying out or excessive use of the “sweat box or sauna.” 22. Do roadwork frequently- use intervals mixing in sprints (6 days a week, take one day off). 23. Time for just one exercise in your workout, RUN. You must run no matter what just remember saftey first. (snow, heat, stairs, night) 24. Keep regular sleeping, eating, and exercising habits. 25. Never disregard any injury - no matter how slight. 26. Keep all workout clothing loose and clean. 27. Spar with smaller men for speed - spar with bigger men for power (always controlled by the coaching staff). 28. Stay relaxed. 29. If you started an exercise you must complete it! You can lighten up or slow down but you may never quit (unless truly injured). Remember once that bell rings there is no way out. 30. Always cool down and stretch after your training session. 31. Learn from as many coaches as possible. Learn all the angles and all the tricks. 32. Then move to the coach that you feel the most comfortable and truly trust and develop a two way relationship. 33.
