Drag racing is a race of pure speed involving two vehicles. You might say that drag racing is to automobile racing what a sprint is to track and field. Drag racing is typically an American sport and began in Southern California were usually illegal races were held on secondary roads. In the year of 1951 the NHRA (National Hot Rod Association) was founded and allowed for the further development of the sport in the 50's and 60's. In 1975 the support of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company led to the creation of the NHRA Winston Championship, which became a national event, attracting sponsors and getting network television coverage. 1993 was the year that the NHRA and drag racing were finally recognized by the FIA, which created a drag racing commission. The NHRA now enjoys international status and oversees the development of drag racing outside of the United States.
