Poker Popularity Stalking the Novice
Is online poker popular? Try typing the words ‘online poker’ into the Google search engine and you’ll see just how popular it is. You’ll see around 21,500,000 results for that simple keyword phrase.
Of all the gambling games, poker is undoubtedly the most recognizable and most popular card game of all. Poker is played by more people around the world than any other game. If evidence was required to back up this claim, one has only to look at the surging increase in online casinos over recent years.
The popularity of online poker has eclipsed the bricks and mortar casino and is set to create record profits for the companies that operate them. The problems now facing so many online players is simply that of choice. It’s like being in an amusement arcade filled with hundreds of slot machines and not being sure which one to play first. And then do you stay with the one machine or do you cruise around trying several.
If you’re just starting out playing online poker, there are literally thousands of online resources for new and professional poker players alike. The number of online poker rooms, casino directories, portals and review sites are, as the Google search will reveal, absolutely astounding. Complete poker newbie’s should check out some of the online poker guides and try out some of the free poker tables in order to help them understand the rules of the online casinos.
From poker rooms and rules, to winning poker tips and strategies, there’s no shortage of poker information on the Internet. It’s advisable for newcomers to this gambling phenomenon to not only familiarize themselves with the rules of the game but also the rules of the house, as house rules may vary from one online casino to the next.
It’s also advisable to study actual live games to get a feel for how players respond to their opponents actions and perhaps pick up a few winning tips from the pros.
There’s no doubt that poker is a skill, which needs to be refined over a period of time, through knowledge and hands-on experience. But with so many websites and articles dedicated to the subject, it’s a skill that can be acquired relatively quickly through little more than reading and pure observation.
Watching and learning from other player’s mistakes or good fortune will go some way to helping the novice understand the rules and strategies of the game, but will not generally expose any particular player’s ability. A player that appears to be consistently successful may in fact be nothing more than lucky. Every experienced player will confirm that an element of luck exists and that it can at times be solely responsible for huge winnings.
However, the newcomer will most certainly be at a disadvantage to the experienced online poker player simply due of their inability to ‘read the cards’ and ‘predict’ the outcome. From my own observations, I have found it quite bizarre how some players seem to instinctively know when to fold, long before the game gets serious, yet stand their ground when they’re forced to stay the course.
In the end it’s all about winning and the novice should realize that even the best players will lose sometimes. If they didn’t, we’d all get a little suspicious.
