Online casinos and online gambling to be made legal in South Africa but who gives a hoot?
South Africa has huge problems. Let me write that again for emphasis, maybe in caps this time, HUGE PROBLEMS.
Inflation is high, Unemployment is at 40%, murders, hijackings and muggings are a constant problem and recently there have been continued attacks /killing of black foreigners because they allegedly “ take the locals jobs and women” . In this gumbo of confusion why would any government go and add legalization of online gambling to the bouquet? Does the government not have enough problems as it is? Oh, I almost forgot, there’s also racism, everybody pretty much hates everyone else who doesn’t look like them.
So South Africa, the biggest and best economy in Africa is legalizing online gambling. What the government is trying to do here is a Robin Hood type maneuver as in, take money from the rich and give to the poor. Their plan is quite genius if I might say so myself especially for a third world country. How are they going to accomplish this? Well let me expound.
South Africa has a booming economy with a lot of wealthy people. It was recently reported that there are over 55,000 million dollar millionaires resident in South Africa, millions of just plain living way above minimum wage rich folk and a large growing middle class. The Government intends to make money from the gambling habits of this elite group in order to provide for its poor disadvantaged black people who it has failed in terms of delivery of promised houses electricity and sanitation.
The government in my own opinion thought this one through and said to themselves that the poor black people don’t have access to a computer let alone internet to gamble so they shouldn’t have to worry about poor black people at gamblers anonymous or in therapy because they keep gambling away their welfare checks. In South Africa 7.3% of households have a computer with internet access, a shocking percentage for the biggest economy in Africa. The target group is therefore the wealthy white South Africans. Sure 1 or 2 lower income citizens might start to gamble online and lose their house, welfare checks or life savings but they’re going to treat those as irritating outliers, trying to mess up the sample and take no notice of them.
With money made from online gambling advertising and licensing, a reported $200 billion dollar industry, the South African government can make billions of dollars a year provided they get good people to oversee the industry. This is money they can use to supplement some of the problems that affect their poor disgruntled black population.
So all in all it is a good move for South Africa. And if getting casinos licensed in South Africa becomes as relevant as a Malta or Macau license, South Africa can very well become the hub for online gambling. In fact, when the American market opens up, which it will really soon, South Africa could be at the forefront and broker a deal with the Yankees so they only allow online casinos with a South African license.
So in conclusion, who gives a hoot if online gambling is legalized in South Africa? The whole online gambling industry should give a hoot as well as every South African.
