The Association soon became as good as extinct, and in 1876, the National League of Professional Baseball Clubs was formed, of which the teams from Boston, Chicago, Cincinnati, Hartford, Louisville, New York, Philadelphia and St. Louis, were its charter members. The National League was an organization of clubs rather than of players, which the National Association was, and the powers rested with its five directors, led by Morgan G.
