Rush Hour: Speeding To Go Nowhere

As I look around, I wonder why so many people are in such a rush to go nowhere. We wake up in the morning; we get ready and speed to work as if our lives are going to come to an end if we take our time. We rush to work five days a week and at the same time anxiously await the weekend.

I've observed women putting on their make-up while driving 10 miles over the speed limit. I observed a man sitting behind 10 cars at a traffic light blowing the horn for everyone to go. Just the other day, I experienced a woman driving 1/4 of a car length behind my bumper because I was only driving 3 miles over the speed limit and it wasn't fast enough for her!

In America, we have made this so called "rush hour" the most dangerous, dreadful, and stressful time of our lives; yet we are constantly in "rush mode" as if our lives depend on it! We have also made the last two days of the week "days of celebration" sort of speak as if the other days are not equally important.

Do you really think rushing to get to work gets you anywhere any faster? Have you ever timed yourself to see how much time you save by rushing being that you cannot physically "save" time? Have you ever thought about slowing down; taking more time to "smell the roses" and why it's important to do so?

I personally think it's very important to slow down! Why? Well...let's find out!

Day 1

You wake up in the morning; you take a shower; you brush your teeth; you comb your hair; you put on your clothes; you rush to McDonalds; you buy your coffee; then you rush to work; and you spend 8 hours working to make enough money to buy groceries for the week maybe!

Day 2

You wake up in the morning; you take a shower; you brush your teeth; you comb your hair; you put on your clothes; you rush to McDonalds; you buy your coffee; then you rush to work; and you spend 8 hours working to make enough money to pay for 1/3rd of your car payment!

Day 3

You wake up in the morning; you take a shower; you brush your teeth; you comb your hair; you put on your clothes; you rush to McDonalds but you get a $120 speeding ticket because you were driving 10 miles over the limit (depending on where you live); you buy your coffee; then you rush to work, but you are late; and you spend 8 hours working to make enough money to pay for the speeding ticket!

Day 4

You wake up in the morning; you repeat your boring tasks of getting ready for work; you rush to McDonalds; you buy your coffee because your life is so boring that you need a stimulant to uplift you; then you rush to work; and you spend 8 hours working to make enough money to pay for another 1/3rd of your car payment!

Day 5

You wake up in the morning; you are happy because it is Friday; you repeat your boring tasks of getting ready for work; you rush to McDonalds; you buy your coffee; then you rush to work and get into a head-on collision; you die on impact and you did not get a chance to enjoy your weekend all because you were rushing to work!

There are 2 morals to this story:

1. Slow down and take the time to live a little. Having a job is good for making money, but you should not be rushing to a place that is only used for that purpose. Do you ever rush to go out to dinner with your friends? Do you ever rush to go to that family picnic? Do you ever rush to take yourself or your kids to a park? Do you ever rush to go on a family vacation? Do you ever rush to out dancing with your husband, wife, boyfriend or girlfriend? If you are like 85% of Americans then the answer is 'no'!

2. Never live only for the weekend because you may not make it to Saturday. There are more days that make up the week than that make up the weekend. Life is much more precious than that and it's not guaranteed. The saying goes there are two guarantees in this world; death and taxes, however the truth is there is only one guarantee; death! Taxes are man-made which mean you can choose to not pay them, however death is the only true guarantee, so take the time to live!
