Nowadays the world moves at a dizzying speed. Whether it’s the new computer program or the latest on who’s dating who, it’s hard to keep up. Everything seems to change so quickly – companies, relationships, technology. All of this rapid change leaves people feeling frustrated, scared and confused. Hypnotherapy is an important tool that can provide the clarity, confidence and guidance people need to navigate their way when dealing with life’s transitions.
In my hypnotherapy practice, most clients that I see are in some transition point in their lives: looking for a job, leaving a job, starting a business, ending a relationship, starting a new relationship, moving, retirement, empty nest. We all know that life is a series of beginnings and endings. Yet no matter how many beginnings and endings we have endured, it isn’t always easy to make a transition.
One of the most challenging places to be in a transition is the in-between state. We have left one thing and yet not begun something new. Sometimes we know what the next thing is; sometimes we’re trying to figure out what is next. This is akin to stepping off a ledge with one foot grounded and yet unable to see where the other foot will land.
This in-between state, commonly referred to as the void, can be a very scary place. So scary to some that they will avoid it at any costs. Our ego-driven consciousness is primarily interested in self-preservation. It is afraid that if it takes a chance and steps off the ledge, it will fall away to oblivion. It feels safer just to stay put, no matter how uncomfortable it gets. The price is often one’s freedom and happiness. In the worst case scenario, life pushes us off the ledge anyway, kicking and screaming the whole way.
What’s the alternative? We’ve all heard the expression, “go with the flow.” We also know there’s truth to it: it’s easier to move with the current than to push upstream. So how can we embrace these inevitable transitions without feeling overwhelmed and afraid?
Hypnotherapy can help in all steps of the transition process by:
• Bringing clarity to the decision-making process.
• Releasing negative thoughts and emotions.
• Clearing out old programming and creating new goals and direction.
• Restoring confidence in oneself and one’s abilities.
• Offering greater awareness and tapping into inner resources of wisdom and guidance.
• Empowering us to trust that we have our own answers and the ability to meet our own needs.
Hypnotherapy can access both the subconscious and the super-conscious mind. The subconscious mind is just beneath the surface of our everyday mind. When unaddressed, it is a storehouse of emotions, patterns, beliefs and motives – hidden from our conscious mind. It can wreak havoc while we’re not looking – creating fear, anxiety and other negative emotions. When addressed, the subconscious mind can be an abundant resource of ideas, creativity and understanding.
Some of the most powerful results from hypnotherapy, however, come from accessing the super-conscious mind, the Universal Mind which is beyond ego. When accessed, it is a vast resource of wisdom, love, compassion and higher awareness. It is common to experience a sense of peace, trust and joy. Sometimes referred to as Spiritual Hypnotherapy, this work is truly transformational.
Through hypnotherapy we can experience a much greater, expanded self. We begin to recognize that we have untapped riches of ideas, understanding, strength, and support. It is all accessible from within. We are no longer victim to the force of change, for we know how navigate our way through any transition.
We cannot stop the force of change in the world or in our lives. Would we even want to? Change provides richness and vibrancy to our lives. We can, however, develop our own inner resources to enable us to receive the gifts that come with change. Then we can welcome life transitions with excitement and hope.
