The British Isles are beautiful. Even with the threat of global warming we can have every hope of keeping it that way.
In a world where fearful climatic conditions, most of which were induced by mankind’s own irresponsible behaviour, are having a devastating effect on the living conditions of millions of people, we live in a green and pleasant land.
We must make every effort to keep it that way.
Go Green Ecology will look at photovoltaic methods of producing electricity, solar water heating, solar heated buildings, insulation, new building designs that bring the outside inside and uses heat exchangers to control heating and air conditioning.
Are there ways of producing wind and wave power to generate electricity without hideously disfiguring the countryside.
If we can make battery storage more efficient every household could generate enough electricity to cover most if not all of its needs and many would be able to sell the surplus to Power Companies for redistribution. It would be a change to see them competing to buy from us instead of charging us as much as they can get away with.
Individuals and a few companies all over the world are putting into practice all of these ideas on a fairly small scale. The trouble is that big business only pays lip service to Go Green strategies. Their financial backers hold them back.
Planning authorities also have a lot to answer for. They should be encouraging the building of eco-friendly houses. Unfortunately most of them are terrified of anything which looks even vaguely different from all the others in the neighbourhood.
We don’t want ranks of starter homes built. In every generation some of the inexpensive housing of the present has ended up as the slums of the future. Back to back terraced housing with small yards, tenement blocks, etc were all acclaimed as the inexpensive answer to the housing problems.
Attractive, inexpensive eco-friendly houses could be built quite quickly. They would enhance the countryside, not destroy it.
And while we are saving our part of the planet we must look to preserving those parts of the rest of the world that are in danger from the depredations of mankind. The rainforests, the animal habitats that are disappearing and we must persuade all those in authority that violence solves nothing. If all the money wasted on killing other humans and manufacturing ever more lethal ways of doing this – if that money was spent on housing and feeding the millions who are living in conditions that we wouldn’t keep animals in poverty and famine would be a thing of the past.
Everything has to start small – so if each of us does our bit to save our little bit of this green and pleasant land perhaps the idea will catch on and spread.
