the Role of Social Institutions in the Person’s Life

“Raw” written by Scott Monk is the description of positive and negative effects of the institution. Society and practically all spheres of our life can be classified as a system or as an institution. Those institutions were created to impose some rules and regulations and people should decide themselves whether to accept them or not. Not all people are willingly accepting all those rules. As a result there is always someone who chooses the rebel. It is not bad, as the result of such rebel can be some improvements of certain rules. The institution aims to reform the drawbacks in order to make them fully practical and industrious members of society. The protagonist of the novel Brett was the witness of the positive and negative effects of institutions.

Brett starts off as a very angry character. He had the outlook, that the world owned him a favor and that nothing was his liability. This is evident from the very beginning of the novel as he sabotages his work by emitting in the water. The initial inability of Brett of taking responsibility for his actions is a main attribute that led his life to disrupt up to this point. Positive consequences of the institution changed the life of Brett and helped him to see the consequences for his dealings. Sam is a character who has the most significant influence on Brett. Monk describes Sam as very responsible person with wise character and just attitude to life, so his words have strong impact on Brett, as Sam teaches him to be responsible for his actions.

The novel is written in colloquial language, which makes it more realistic. This is very significant, as it helps to identify the situation where Brett appeared. The character of Brett changes very much, when he starts to be responsible for his actions and think not only about himself, but about those who around him.
