The Missiles Crisis

When in 1962 the USSR sent their missiles and other weapons to Cuba, the United States of America considered it to be a big threat, a huge problem for the whole country. The President had to act. Kennedy had to force the removal of the missiles owned by the Soviet Union from Cuba.

As a consequence Cuba made an air and a sea blockade. At about 10 o’clock in the morning on the 24th of October the quarantine of Cuba began. All the ships coming to Cuba were thoroughly checked. 12 destroyers were patrolling the waters. The United States of America sent about 50-80 planes and six destroyers. Key West, Guantanamo, and Puerto Rico also had air patrols. The American military buildup was impressive. One Marine and five army divisions of the United States of America contented the invasion force: 100,000 Army and 40,000 Marine troops. About 579 combat aircrafts and 183 ships were ready to go.

On the 26th of October President Kennedy told the only quarantine wouldn’t make the Soviets remove their missiles from Cuba. He believed that only invasion would change the situation. The pressure was increasing. The frequency of low-level flights over Cuba changed much. It was no longer twice a day, but once every two hours. The Soviet Union made the States promise that Cuba wouldn’t be invaded by America.

The next morning, at about six o’clock the State department got a private letter from Premier Khrushchev sent from the American Embassy in Moscow. The President Robert Kennedy accepted the proposal of settlement.
