Inspired by Nature: Log Cabin Home Decor

Reminiscent of simpler times in history, log cabin home decor is making a serious comeback both in the city and in country homes. With our days and evenings full of technology, appliances, stress, and reckless abundance, there is little wonder that a yearning for a less cluttered, more peaceful surrounding is sought in home decor.

Log homes are today's version of yesteryear's cabins. Cabins, once created by erecting rough hewn logs into walls, are today stacked and sealed in various formations.

Log cabin decorating returns us to nature, within our own abode through forest, mountain, and lake inspiration. It returns us to our heritage as pioneers within Canada and the United States. Whether your home or room to be decorated is in the hills of Kentucky or the urban metropolis of Los Angeles, you can recreate the cabin home sensation and stay within a moderate budget.

Take cues from childhood memories at the lakeside cottage, camping excursions or your most recent walk through any large city park or garden. Then recreate your room or home log cabin decor style from those memories of nature sightings.

Log cabin decor was 'invented' by people just like you albeit most of them lived in a log home and were looking to blend their walls with their lifestyle ideals. They wandered their property and found empty bird's nests, created chairs and side tables out of twigs, brought the colors of autumn maple leaves into their home with fabrics and wall art.

This is a warm and rustic decorating style that touches even the most sophisticated urban dweller. Even city folk love the warmth and idea of curling up by a crackling fireplace in a mountain resort. And who amoung us can resist the tempation of a week's vacation; fishing, swimming or hiking at a friend's cabin in the woods?

The draw for log home living (or owning a rustic weekend retreat in the form of a log cabin) is found in each of us. The popularity of log homes are distinguished by the high prices set on any completed home, in any area of the United States and Canada. From eastern shores of Maine to the western plains and beyond, the price of log cabins and homes - especially those traditionally decorated - increase in value and demand every year.

Log Cabin Home Decor by Region

Although all log cabin and home decor are inspired by natural materials and considerations of wildlife and nature, this decorating style also takes cues from their surrounding region. Cabins in the east, for example, are generally focused more on nature - think deer antler chandeliers and moose graphic bathroom sets. Now consider decorating a cabin in the western region - colors are softer and in earth tones, the gray hues of the moutain ranges, and sage greens of the desert brush.

For that matter, don't stop at color - consider the hues of the room you are decorating in log cabin style. Green hues in eastern cabin style might be deeper (spruce, pine, and maple trees in the summer). White birch is a nice touch and can be found in candles, photo frames, or simulated on any wood furniture in your home. While the green hues and tones in western cabins might be muted, the bright skies will bring in bold color to your overall scheme.

This doesn't stop at walls or art. Consider your bedding (the warmth of flannel is perfect), your upholstery, and your table ware - all perfectly ideal to lend the color splash that will make your home unique.

Making A House, A Home with Log Cabin Decorating

Nearly anything goes with log cabin decor, but most important is to make it your own. Your interests, your unqiue touches are what will make this log home or cabin your own. If fishing is your passion then load up on rustic fishing signs, vintage creels, and antique wooden lures as finishing touches. Or perhaps you are more of a nature hike fanatic - in this case you might like photos of wildlife in rustic frames, unique branches or twisted stumps found on the path of your last walk (these make great curtain rods or side tables).
