Those with friends and relatives living abroad who may want to come visit London for a bit of sight-seeing will be happy to note that there are many ‘must-see’ places in this lovely city. For purposes of providing them a ready reference, allow me to list some of these places.
• Covent Garden. Situated in the Central London district, this site is always abuzz with activity. Think Covent Garden and the image of the most vibrant party epicenter of London flashes before your eyes. Its daily fare consists of lively street performances by street artists who perform amidst the rows of restaurants and bars. The world renowned Royal Theater can be found here and shopping is always interesting and fun with the numerous shops that cater to all tastes and budgets. Although the area is mostly visited by tourists, it is not uncommon to see young Londoners hanging out in this trendy area relaxing after work or enjoying a round of drinks with friends.
• The Tate Modern. The Tate Modern is an exceptional museum with an amazing architecture that can leave you breathless. Inaugurated in the year 2000, this ultra-modern museum features modern artwork by renowned artists like Picasso, Matisse, Pollock, Warhol and Dali.
• St. Paul’s Cathedral. Accessible via the Millennium Bridge from the Tate Modern is the magnificent and beautiful St. Paul’s Cathedral. Designed by court architect Sir Christopher Wren, the current St. Paul’s Cathedral was built between 1675 and 1710 after its predecessor was destroyed in the Great Fire of London. As the Cathedral of the capital city, St. Paul’s has served as the venue for spiritual events of overwhelming importance. For one, this was the Cathedral where Prince Charles of Wales married Diana Spencer in 1981 and most recently, where the Thanksgiving for the Golden Jubilee Her Majesty the Queen was held.
• Portobello Market. On a sunny day, driving to the vibrant antiques market along Portobello Road can be a most exhilarating experience. This is where you can find shops that are open six days a week although Saturday is the day when the market comes alive with all kinds of products on sale from fresh produce to jewelry.
• Harrod’s. Harrod’s is the ultimate paradise for shoppers! There is no best way to describe the grandeur of this shopping mall that spans about five acres over five floors, each floor carrying the most expensive toys, the most high-tech toys, the most beautiful clothes and jewelry. If it’s food and entertainment you are after, Harrod’s has that too in an immense range of choices. To sum it up, Harrod’s has everything you ever wanted to buy.
• Hyde Park. This 350 acres of historic landscape is as important to London’s population as Central Park is to the residents of New York City. Originally acquired by Henry VIII from the monks of Westminster Abbey in 1536 for use as hunting grounds, Hyde Park today is a recreational area that offers various types of activities to many London residents. Rowing, rollerblading, wildlife watching, horseback-riding or just plain picnicking are some of the activities that one can enjoy in Hyde Park.
• The London Eye. They say the best way to get a bird’s eye view of a city that you visit for the first time is to go to the highest point and view it from the top. In London, the perfect place to do this is on the London Eye or Millennium Wheel, the world’s largest Ferris Wheel that offers an awesome view of the entire city of London including the Buckingham Palace, the Big Ben and the River Thames.
Whatever one’s reasons may be for visiting London, the visit is never totally complete without experiencing what it’s like to be in these magnificent places. All put together, these historical landmarks give the city of London the air of majesty and splendor that it is known for throughout the world.
