Top Destination Ideas and Travel Tips for Visiting Russia


When you’re planning our vacation destinations, you immediately think of the sunny beaches of the Bahamas or traveling across the safari of Africa. No one ever thinks of Russia or its beautiful, capitol city of Moscow when they are making their vacation plans. You know what? They’re missing out. Tourists, foreigners, and Russians themselves all flock to Moscow to see what makes this city pulse.


We think of old stereotypes when we talk about Russia. We remember the old communist regime they used to be or the hockey powerhouse they are. Nowadays, Moscow is a busy and fast-paced city with over 11 million people living in it, but it is also steady and reliable with its cultural and historic relics that are still a fundamental part of the Russian consciousness.


We sometimes forget how rich in history and culture Moscow actually is. There are countless works of centuries old art. Russia is rich in music and dance tradition, The Nutcracker for example. Here are some of the top places you need to see if you get the chance to visit Moscow.


  • The Kremlin - The Moscow Kremlin is Moscow’s most famous attraction and a must-see for all visitors. It is the most recognized building in all of Russia. Once inside, you can visit the historic cathedrals of Cathedral Square, where all of the old czars once worshiped. The Tsar Bell and Tsar Cannon, two immobile monuments to the grandeur of Russia’s past, are also on display for you to see. The Amory Museum holds precious relics, like gold carriages and royal garments, of old Imperial stature.

  • Red Square - Just outside the Kremlin is Moscow’s famous Red Square. You can witness the changing of the guard at the Eternal Flame. You can even visit Lenin’s Tomb which is more famous than impressive. If get the chance to see St. Basil’s Cathedral, do it. It is just as beautiful on the inside as it is the outside.

  • State Tretyakov Gallery –Filled with monuments and portraits of revered Russian leaders like Catherine the Great, the State Tretrakov Gallery has the best and most extensive collection of Russian art. Open a book or take a class on Russian art and you’ll find all of those the significant pieces will be hanging in the Tretyakov.

  • Izmaylovo Market - This is the central souvenir market of Moscow, and s where you can buy all things Russian. You can choose from folk crafts, antiques, jewelry, chess sets, or anything else you want to bring home with you.

  • Old Arbat Street - Moscow's most famous thoroughfare, Old Arbat Street, is a tourist’s dream. You'll find some all kinds of souvenirs here ranging to the usual to the one of a kind. Artists, street musicians, and performers will be fighting for your attention. The street is for pedestrians only, which means it's great for people watching and not traffic watching.

  • Victory Park - Victory Park in Moscow memorializes their Great Patriotic War, or also known as World War II to us. World War II took a huge toll in human life to Russia. It’s easy to find WWII memorials across Russia’s landscape, but Victory Park is Moscow's home for these monuments, sculptures, fountains, and obelisks.

  • Sparrow Hills – There is no where else in all of Russia to get a view like the one from Sparrow Hills. Standing at this vantage point allows you to look at the entire expanse of the city. It seems like it was heavenly made for photographs, sweet romantic moments, or simply jotting down your thoughts for aspiring authors.

  • GUM - The GUM is Moscow's most famous shopping center. The facade that faces into Red Square has maintained the same appearance since the 19th century. You can find a variety of different shops selling everything and anything you may want.
