The majority of Exmoor national park is located in Somerset with the other third in the northern region of Devon and is known for the distinguished landscape with heather moorland, secluded valley's and stony coastlands. There are several quaint villages with several being particularly charming such as Allerford, Bossington and Selworthy. The coastal villages are just as beautiful such as Porlock a noted picturesque coastal village that has been known to inspire many painters and Lynton and Lynmouth known for the Victorian railway.
There are several very beautiful areas to gaze over Exmoor's rough scenary, from the historic Dunster Castle with its surrounding subtropical gardens, built on a hill top, the panorama is spectacular. Dunkery Beacon is the highest point in Exmoor and also has truely spectacular views with a trig point and a toposcope on its summit. Northerly aspects include the Mendips and the Brecon Beacons and to the south Bodmin and Dartmoor although it all depends upon the weather on any given day.
Withypool has some local interesting sites to visit as there is a stone circle nearby. There is also a stone bridge to visit called the Tarr step which crosses the river Barle. For an amazing picnic spot Wimbleball lake is the largest lake in Exmoor and can offer you several water based activities.
Exmoors unrivalled magnificence has encouraged many writers and painters over the last few centuries notably Lorna Doone by R.D. Blackmore which is centred in the village of Oare, known as Doone Country in the book it is evident that Exmoor has deeply inspired R.D.Blackmore.
The wildlife is can be a big reason to visit, as well as the world famous ponies there are bats, badgers and red deer all regularly seen. The park homes over 80 species of birds there are some migrant and other native to this country to see in the beautiful woodland environment, this is particularly worth seeing at springtime as it is carpeted in bluebells.
