Rhodes Greece

WELCOME TO RHODES, GREECE!

Rhodes, the largest of the Dodecanese Island, is found at the southeastern border of the archipelago. It is the meeting point of three continents. It is situated at the junction of two major sea routes of the Mediterranean, between the Aegean Sea and the coast of Middle East, also Cyprus and Egypt. This island in the Aegean Sea is only about 9-10 kilometers away from the coasts of Asia Minor

The origin of Rhodes is related to a myth about Zeus, the god of all Greek gods, and Helios, god of the Sun. In the myth, Zeus divided the earth among the gods after he defeated the Giants. Helios was not around when Zeus divided the earth so he did not get his share. Since Zeus cannot make another division, Helios made him and the other gods promise that when a land comes out of the sea, the land would be his. When an island rose from the sea, Helios claimed it. He showered it with glow and warmth and he made it the most spectacular island in the Aegean Sea. That is why Rhodes is called the Sun Island; there is hardly a day when the sun does not shine over the island. Other names used in referring Rhodes were Ophiousa because of the numbers of snake living in the area, Asteria for its blue and starry sky, Makaria for its captivating beauty, and Atavyria after its highest mountain, Atavyros.

The island’s surface area covers 1,398 square kilometers. Most of it is hills and low mountains, majority of which are covered with forests. Its natural resources are an attraction to tourists, making Rhodes not only one of the largest islands in Greek but also one of the most beautiful.

Rhodes is also known as the Island of Roses because the rock-rose in the island is so fertile. Aside from roses, it is also the home of relaxing beaches, flourishing, green forests, and has one of the top sunshine records in Greece. These are among the reasons why Rhodes is one of the most visited resorts in the Mediterranean.

Apart from its beautiful environment, the Rhodes city is filled with infrastructures designed to accentuate the place’s history. Some of the popular buildings are Acropolis of Rhodes, Temple of Athena Polias, Nymphaia, Odeion and churches like Church of Aghia Aikaterine (St. Catherine) and Church of Aghia Triada (Holy Trinity).

Rhodes is always full of life—offering a wide selection of entertainment like sports, cultural events, night-life, and trips to neighboring islands. All of its cities have a distinct charm on its own. Haraki is a small fishing village next to Lindos, the village where no cars are permitted in most of its area. Other cities are Pefkos, Faliraki, Kalithea, Larkos, Gennadi, Afandou, Ixia, and Theologos.
