Ten Sightseeing Day Trips From London


Once you have seen all of London's most famous landmarks, why not spend a day out from the busy capital and discover some other interesting destinations.



Ely


A visit to Ely in Cambridgeshire which is just over an hour from the London main line railway station Kings Cross, will give you the opportunity to visit the fabulous Ely Cathedral which dates back to the eleventh century. The Great Ouse river is to be found on the eastern side of the town and is a popular spot for walkers and boat trips.



Colchester


Historic Colchester is the oldest recorded town in England and its highlights are the Castle Park with its Norman Castle which dates from 1076. Colchester was invaded by the Romans in 43AD and there is still plenty evidence of their occupation to see, including the imposing Roman walls. Colchester can be reached by rail from London's Liverpool Street station in around one hour.



Paris

With the opening of the Channel Tunnel, London to Paris has now become a day trip by high speed rail.
The Eurostar service starts from St Pancras Station in London and arrives at the Gard Du Nord station in central Paris in only two hours fifteen minutes. From the Gard Du Nord metro station you can travel
to the famous Louvre Museum, the Eiffel Tower and the expensive shops on the Rue De Rivoli.



Calais


A great favorite of the British is the day trip from Dover to Calais in France, mainly to purchase wine, beer and cigarettes with less tax to pay. Many coach companies run day trips to Calais and the highlight for many is the seventeen mile boat ride across the English Channel which takes around ninety minutes. Calais has a market on every Saturday and the beach is a delight in the summertime.



Brighton


An upmarket south coast seaside resort which in some areas resembles Chelsea in London.
If you are arriving at London Gatwick Airport, Brighton and the south coast is only twenty eight miles away and is served by frequent train and bus links. The Famous London to Brighton Veteran car run finishes on Madeira Drive on Brighton seafront and is well worth a visit.



Isle of Wight


The beautiful and restful Isle of Wight is located on the south coast of England. The most practical ferry crossing departs from Portsmouth to Ryde and from there you can discover the charms of the island by railway. A comprehensive bus service can transport you all over the island with Sandown, Shanklin, Ventnor and the Isle of Wight capital town Newport being very popular tourist attractions.



Cambridge


Visit the famous university town and center of learning which is now enjoying city status. Departing from London Kings Cross railway station the journey to Cambridge takes about an hour. Discover the historic streets, take a punt on the river Cam or explore the pretty gardens.



Clacton on Sea

Enjoy a day trip to Clacton on Sea and discover the typical UK seaside resort. Trains leave from London Liverpool Street Station and arrive at Clacton about ninety minutes later. Clacton Pier and the Amusements are a ten minute walk from the station. The seafront rose gardens lead down to the beach and sea which is ideal for swimming and sunbathing in the summer months.


Canterbury


Located in the heart of Kent, Canterbury is famous for its cathedral and St Augustine's Abbey. Kent is well Known as the Garden of England and is a producer of English wine. The Barnsole Vineyard near Canterbury offers comprehensive or short tours of their Vineyard and wine production area.



Oxford


Positioned to the north west of London, Oxford a university town can be reached from London's Paddington railway station. The Christ Church College dates back to 1546 and incorporates a cathedral within it's grounds. Oxford's Bridge of Sighs, built in 1913 can be found in New College Lane. The Venice inspired bridge spans the two parts of Hertford College in the heart of historic Oxford.
