It all started with my mid-life crisis. My youngest child would be starting school soon and I needed to think about re-entering the work force. It was time to answer that age-old question of “what did I want to do when I grew up.” My grandfather had always told me, “Do what you love, be the best at it and the money will take care of itself.”

Maybe I had watched too many episodes of “Little House on the Prairie” as a child but what I love to do more than anything is homesteading. I love gardening, raising animals, quilting, gathering firewood, baking bread in a wood cookstove and living close to the land. From this foundation, the idea of Huckleberry Tent and Breakfast was born.

I set out to create a unique North Idaho bed and breakfast that I, personally, would love to stay at. I wanted an old-fashioned camping experience but with all the comforts of a traditional bed and breakfast. A place where people could have a good night’s sleep but also enjoy a campfire, pump water by hand, view the stars and just get back to the simple way of life.

First, I decided to have only 3 canvas wall tents on my end-of-the-road 42 acres to ensure a peaceful and private retreat from the modern world. Next, I wanted families and couples to rediscover each other, so no electricity, video games, tv, internet or other modern distractions. For comfort and convenience, each 12×14 tent features a porch, plank floor, wood-burning stove and queen-sized bed. For a complete camping experience, every site offers a screened and equipped camp kitchen, hand pumped water, private outhouse, outdoor shower, campfire and s’mores.

To learn pioneer living first hand, guest may help in the organic garden, gather eggs, feed chickens and goats, learn to sew on a treadle sewing machine, cook in a dutch oven, use an old-fashioned clothes washer, gather morel mushrooms and berries (in season), make jam, hike the many nature trails or just relax and enjoy the outdoors.

My dream is to offer an alternative to the hectic, fast-paced modern world. My hope is to create a place where people can come to reconnect with life, land and spirit.
