Welcome to Mauritius and its beaches

Mauritius is one of the youngest republics in the world. The island is officially ruled by the Queen of Britain. Its rather small, but is famous for its unique national and cultural diversity. For ages people have been arriving here from various world destinations: Europe, Asia, Madagascar. They brought their customs, languages, religions and numerous religious holidays celebrated on the island.

Its landscape impresses with its contrasts: you will see mountains and forest lands, extinct volcanoes, steep rocks, endless plains, plateaus, unique reserves, numerous waterfalls and lakes, coral reefs and serene sands of boundless beaches. The name of the country’s capital - Port Louis – derives from the name of the French monarch - Louis XV. This is a beautiful city filled with the colours of the past. All the streets bear French names, its houses and squares still remember the magnificence of the XVIII century. Walking along the residential districts, you will be carried away by this eastern fairy-tale with Muslim mosques and towers of Hindu temples.

Go to Mauritius to see the renowned Chinese statuette with its head swinging, the Jummah Mosque and St James Cathedral. Chinese traders work closer to the port. But the main attraction of Port Louis is its unique market – something between the Arabic or Paris style, with their colourful saris, smiling faces, vivid personages, baskets full of fruits, pots and pans, juicy exotic fruits arranged accurately in a row. The island’s business centre is Curepipe, where one will find embassies, main companies and posh mansions belonging to people of importance. You can also observe the colonial-style municipality building or the royal college – one of the oldest educational institutions of the 18th century.

Climb the mountains and you will observe the whole island. The diverse greenery is seen from this height: emerald, malachite, soft green or rich green bamboo. Other cities stretch along the road as an endless chain that connects the north and the south of the island. Abundance of colourful Creole markets with their heady aromas, colourful celebrations with dancing and singing, restaurants and bars serving delicious seafood will bring you joy throughout your stay at Mauritius. Needless to say, the island boasts of its reach flora and fauna, splendid coral reefs, beaches and lagoons that are thought to be the world’s most picturesque.

The island’s north-western coast is really warm, hidden from south-eastern tropic winds, especially in winter. It is here that Grand-Baie, local Saint-Tropez, with its numerous Indian, Chinese, Creole and French restaurants, elegant shops and stores, 24-hour bars and cafes are located.

Western coast is the place where mountains supersede sea, green slopes and endless beaches. Black River is known all around the world as a perfect place for fishing.

There is Morne Brabant dominating the blue lagoons of the Southern Coast. Local beaches are exceptionally beautiful, underwater fauna is rich and diverse. The East Coast is perfect for those fond of surfing, especially June to September, when the ocean and tropical south-eastern winds are menacing and strong.

Those who arrive here have a wonderful choice of hotels that suit any taste and purse: from luxurious to moderate ones. That is why Mauritius is often called the cheapest of the most expensive resorts.
