    Palm Springs was home to the Cahuilla Indians.

    The Cahuilla Indians spent the winter months

    around the hot mineral springs and then during

    the hot summer months the tribe moved to the

    canyons. In 1884, Judge John Guthrie McCallum

    became the first to relocate to Palm Springs.

    Together, Judge McCallum and the Cahuilla Indians

    built a 19-mile ditch from Whitewater River to

    the area now known as Palm Springs.

    In 1909 Dr. Harry and Nellie Coffman began a

    sanitorium, The Desert Inn. It was designed to

    assist people with tuberculosis. Years later,

    The Desert Inn became a first class resort

    playing host to many famous families including

    the Vanderbilts and Hearsts families.


    Today, Palm Springs is a central city in the

    Coachella Valley. It is home to many Hollywood

    Stars and has been nicknamed "The Playground to

    the Stars". In the early 1990's Sonny Bono

    began one of the largest foreign film festivals.
