Future of Technical Writing services in India

The last decade of the twentieth century has seen an unprecedented rise in liberalization and globalization initiated by the Indian government so that the spurt in technological advancement, especially in the field of Information technology and software development, is suitably harnessed to make India one of the leading countries in this field. This crusade of technological development has been spearheaded by leading companies such as Wipro, Infosys, Tata Indicom, Quark and many others who have helped to put India’s name in the forefront thus leading to all round development and generation of employment. The advancement of Information Technology has brought with it many ancillary opportunities such as technical writing, which goes hand-in-hand with the development of new products. This is a very important aspect of the development of Information Technology and Tata Consultancy Services were the first to initiate this need for technical writing. It is not essential to have a degree or diploma in any technical field in order to work in the technical writing field, as even a layman can become a technical writer. All that is needed is a good command over the English language so that the technical writer can put across his ideas to the common man in a simple and easily understood manner. Basically, technology has to be communicated to non-technical persons in such a way that they can understand the working of a gadget without having to go through long texts or manuals. It is the flair for making complex technical explanations into simple statements that is needed to excel in technical writing. India is taking giant strides in the fields of automobiles, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and information technology with the result that the demand for technical writing services is also increasing. Consequently, the employment potential is also booming. Technical writing encompasses the writing of product manuals, online help files, multimedia presentations, installation manuals for software and many other such applications. The technical writer has to be adept in writing the above types of manuals, especially the products and project development programs of the software industry, in such a simple fashion that the common man will not have difficulty in understanding. In the western world, especially USA and Europe, technical writing is a full time course in many Communication schools where undergraduate, graduate, and Master’s level courses are conducted. Studies for PhD degrees are also carried out by many scholars. This is the result of the booming job market in this field in those countries but in India no such courses are being offered by the Universities but some organizations like Society for Technical Communicators, India, and Technical Writers of India have taken cognizance of the importance of this field and have been active in propagating the same. The remunerations for people in the technical writing field can be anything between Rs. 6000 to Rs. 8000 per month for a beginner with a good command over English and with a desire to learn and work hard, whereas those with two years experience are earning Rs. 18,000 and those with four years experience are getting Rs. 25,000 per month, giving a 14 per cent increase per year. The above figures are based on the general trend in the industry and keep changing with different situations and the economic growth pattern. trend in the industry and keep changing with different situations and the economic growth pattern.
