Getting ready to write your life's story or fiction
perhaps? The following tips will help you to utilize your
time effectively so that you finish your book as quickly
as is possible:
Whatever you write about, don't be boring.
Write on topics that piques readers curiosity. If for
example, you're writing your life story, write about
the most interesting parts, not the mundane. Make sure
your book excites, motivates, educates or solve readers'
problems. Most readers are looking for answers to their
relationships, financial or health problems. Let your book
give it to them.
Write daily if possible.
Many new authors start the writing process all gung-ho
only to stop for days or even longer.
An author who doesn't write consistently normally finds
that the gaps between writing gets longer and longer. As a
consequence, he may stop writing permanently. Therefore,
it is prudent to write each day in order to reduce this
possibility.
However, there is a small caveat here. Not all writers
write daily because they have their own particular way of
getting into a rhythm. Writing daily may seem forced to
them and so they write only when inspired. If that is your
way, then don't change that.
Formulate an outline.
Know where you are taking your story before you actually
write it. This helps to significantly reduce rewriting
and plot inconsistencies.
How do create an outline? You do this by spending a
few minutes asking yourself a series of questions and
answering them.
For instance, where are the characters located? - how are
the characters feeling? - what clothes do they have on?
and so on. Coming up with an outline this way is more
effective than wrestling with a series of statements.
Keep writing
Keep premature editing and rewriting down to a minimum
if not, eliminate it at altogether. Leave this task
until the book is completed.
Editing and rewriting too early is frequently a way for
writers to fool themselves that they are actually making
progress. When you write until the finish, the end product
is more often than not, better than taking the
perfectionist way of editing everything you can.
Designate a time for writing
Whether you decide to write for at least 30 minutes or
3 hours, the crucial thing is that you're not disturbed
nor do you cut short your writing time. You'll find that
because of this discipline, the quality of your writing
gets better.
Leave research until the end
Whenever you reach a section in your book where you want
to conduct research, simply put an "X" at that point and
carry on writing.
Doing research can be an enjoyable activity, but some
authors get obsessed about it to the point where they
stop writing for a protracted time. It is better to wait
until the end of your writing, research the areas that
needs attention and then include that information there.
Set a quota of words to write daily
The big league authors write 2000 words daily or more.
They have done it many times - it is easier for them.
If you're just starting out, start with a
quota of say 150 words or less. As times go on and
you build confidence, you'll be writing more as ideas
flow.
If you follow these tips, you'll find that you're well
on your way to finishing your book in good time.
